Community Memorial Healthcare Foundation

Specific Need

During the planning process to build a new hospital, CMH received many requests from patient families and community members to consider including a dialysis clinic in its project. Dr. Fadi Bedros, owner of Flint Hills Dialysis in Manhattan, KS, and consulting nephrologist here at Marysville, agreed to expand his operation to include a clinic in Marysville if the hospital would establish a space for it. Such space was included in the remodel of what is now known as the hospital’s South Plaza building.

In preparation for the new clinic, CMH Foundation, through the generosity of Mr. Norman Nork, purchased the specialized water treatment system, patient chairs, and televisions for the new space. Dr. Bedros supplied the remaining equipment, supplies, and staff. As with any medical equipment, repeated use of the hemodialysis machines causes wear and tear requiring them to be replaced. Dr. Bedros has asked CMH Foundation to consider assisting with the purchase of new hemodialysis machines. While the local dialysis clinic is independently owned and operated by Flint Hills Dialysis, the Foundation understands the importance it plays in our community. Patients receive dialysis in Marysville three days a week, each life-sustaining treatment lasting 3-4 hours. If this service is not offered locally, travel to Manhattan three days a week for treatments would be required. Travel expenses and time away from work and home create a burden for patients, families, and caregivers.

The clinic is looking to replace seven hemodialysis machines at a total cost of $92,750. Dr. Bedros has asked if CMH Foundation would consider funding half of the cost, or $46,375. The Foundation has received over $6,000 from the Marysville Community Foundation’s Public Health Fund towards this project. Pony Up Marysville Match Day gifts to CMH Foundation will be designated for the hemodialysis machines as well as several items for the hospital’s nursing and ER departments.

Access to local healthcare is so important, whether it is the convenience of dialysis treatments close to home or a hospital serving the community 24/7. We hope they are important to you too and we look forward to partnering with you to continue both.

CMH Foundation was formed in 2009 to promote and encourage the maintenance, expansion, and the development of Community Memorial Healthcare and received its 501(c)3 designation in 2012. From 2012 to the present, CMH Foundation has granted over $570,000 to the hospital for medical equipment, supplies, and services.

Community Memorial Healthcare (CMH) is a private, not-for-profit, 25-bed critical access hospital which receives no local or state tax support. It offers emergency, acute care, obstetrics, surgical, ancillary, and outpatient services in addition to three rural health clinics, home health services, a durable medical equipment store, and contract services of physical, occupational and speech therapies, dialysis clinic, and anesthesia. The hospital employs seven family practice physicians, one general surgeon, and six nurse practitioners. Its outpatient referral clinic offers a wide range of specialty services provided by over 25 physicians from Manhattan, KS, and Lincoln, NE. CMH is the only hospital in Marshall County and is a safety net provider of healthcare services to the county and surrounding areas. It operates 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year providing care and services to all individuals regardless of their ability to pay. Each year the hospital provides over $1 million in uncompensated care.

Healthcare is a rapidly advancing field requiring staff and physicians to constantly hone their skills, facilities to be equipped with modern technology, and offer a vast array of services, all while operating as efficiently as possible. The foundation relies on the generosity of our donors to help fill the monetary gap and allow CMH to continue providing services locally, utilizing up-to-date medical technology, at the level of quality our patients have come to expect. We are proud to support CMH staff, working across all departments of the hospital, providing quality care and compassion right here at home.

In the fall of 2018 we made our largest year-end appeal request to date, over $160,000 to fund a new 3D mammography system. We are proud to report that through the generosity of our donors, including a special gift of $100,000 from Mr. Don Landoll and the Landoll Corporation, the hospital’s new 3D mammography will be installed later this month and ready to use in mid-May!
